In what will unfortunately be a regular report, five more notable restaurant and foodservice outlets have closed permanently as a result of the coronavirus crisis.

Typically, Restaurant Hospitality tracks prominent restaurant closures by quarter, but the pandemic is accelerating the need for more frequent reports.

Results from a recent survey by the James Beard Foundation and the Independent Restaurant Coalition found that 80% of independent restaurant operators fear they will not be able to come back after the pandemic-related shutdown is over.

The National Restaurant Association contends the industry is on track to lose about $80 billion in revenue by the end of April, with industry losses expected to total $240 billion through the end of the year. The NRA, which is seeking more government intervention to support the industry, estimates 4 in 10 restaurants have already closed their doors with no  hope of reopening.

This week’s entries include a beloved New York City nighttime spot helmed by Keith McNally  — who was released from the hospital earlier this month after suffering from COVID-19 — a Los Angeles donut institution and a San Francisco ice cream shop.
