New on the Menu: New York City special

Italian dishes traditional and not, upscale duck mole, a dish from a mushroom-based restaurant, and a cocktail based on a Thai film

Pretty much every American city has a dynamic food scene now, but New York City continues to have a very deep bench of culinary talent, as reflected this week with dishes and a drink from the Big Apple.

Mario’s, a century-old Italian restaurant in the Bronx, continues to evolve, recently with a pasta dish inspired by a trip to Italy last summer and named after his mother.

In the Manhattan neighborhood of Nolita, a brand new Italian restaurant, Cantiere Hambirreria, features a hamburger inspired by the ingredients and flavors of the region of Puglia.

No meat is to be found at Third Kingdom in Manhattan’s East Village. The vegan restaurant specializes in mushroom, including large raviolo stuffed with king trumpets.

Across town in Chelsea, a new Northeastern Thai restaurant named Sappe (which means “delicious” in the regional dialect), offers a cocktail from a list that highlights female protagonists in literature and film.

Finally, on the Upper East Side, at Soledad, a Mexican restaurant named after chef and owner Julian Medina’s grandmother, duck mole is enhanced with sweet plantains and a rich duck egg.
